Lapsong Souchong
Black Tea / Fujian, China
Nestled in the protected Tongmuguan region of the Wuyi Mountains, and considered by some as the earliest ancestor of black teas, lapsong souchong was once one of the most coveted of exports to Europe via the Silk Road.
Having gone through a special process of being smoked with pine wood, the leaves soak up a condensed flavor of pine smoke and dark plum that is the trademark of Lapsong Souchong. Smoky and slightly tart, the broth is sweet, refreshing, and opens up the senses.
When brewed in a zisha pot (purple clay pot), the broth becomes exquisite and condensed, when brewed in a gaiwan or porcelain pot, the layers in the broth become defined and rich. Each method equally exhibits the tea’s outstanding qualities.
