Since childhood, Gu Shang-Ling has loved doodling and drawing, which eventually led her to ceramic art. She was deeply drawn to clay for its directness and openness. The contact and interaction between hand and clay become an immediate exchange of physical and emotional perception. Clay allows her to explore as she works, while also making room for mistakes and starting over. As someone who considers herself less comfortable with words, she has found in shaping clay her own way of “speaking.” The unpredictability and variables of the firing process likewise become a source of individuality, giving each work its own distinct character.

For many years, she has continued to create functional ceramics—including cups, bowls, plates, teapots, and vessels for flowers. In her hands, the warm, substantial nature of clay unfolds with a sense of ease. Surfaces left largely unrefined, contours that resist perfect alignment, and tiny undulations as delicate as pores all preserve the traces of material and handcraft. These imperfections, like a rugged path strewn with stones, invite the hand, the heart, and the eye to rediscover the sensation of touching a leaf or tracing the surface of a rock—to experience the beauty of objects as independent presences, while also allowing them to become part of everyday life.

Her works resemble an untamed autumn landscape, carrying just the right measure of quiet austerity and warmth.
